I have a pending court date for misdemeanor petty theft. It is my first offense. What is the average punishment (fine amount, comminuty service, etc.) and how will this effect filing my taxes?

you should strive to get the case ACOD (adjourned to later be dismissed.
You should not expect jail time, but it would be highly recommended to have an experienced lawyer with you defending you and preserving your rights in court.
