Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
A person I know very well was found guilty of a felony. There has been a call for positive character references in hopes of shortening his sentence. However, I strongly believe him to be guilty and have examples of his behavior that support my intuition. Would it be of any use to write a negative character reference to the court in order to offset the positive references?

You state that you strongly believe him to be guilty and have examples of his behavior that support your intuitive belief that he is guilty. However, you further state that he has already been found guilty. In that case, your information and belief as to his guilt is completely immaterial since it has already been established in court by the guilty verdict.
