Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Petit larceny
I got caught shop lifting at a Lord & Taylor in NY. I am 22 years old and this is my first offense. my record is completely clean. I want to do everything possiable to make sure this doesnt effect my future, like getting a job. I have a court date in about a month. i would like to be prepared and im just need some advice in what to do. i would like know what my options are to make sure this doesnt go on my record (i read about something called diversion) and what could possibly happen to me. please someone help me.

This charge is a misdemeanor, if you plead guilty to a misdemeanor you will have permanent ramifications for potential work... However nowhere near as bad as if it were a felony conviction.

If you are able to afford an attorney I would suggest that you hire one as soon as possible to allow them to begin negotiations with the DA's office ASAP... If not they will appoint a legal aide attorney to you...
