Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
petit larceny
My son is 16 y/o and was caught shoplifting. He has no criminal history whatsoever and he is very remorseful. What kind of punishment can we expect? We don't want to get a lawyer, just want to plead guilty and accept whatever punishment they hand down.

Re: petit larceny
Not getting a lawyer and pleading guilty would be a BIG mistake. Petit larceny is a Class A misdemeanor and pleading guilty would leave your son with a criminal record that could haunt him for the rest of his life. There are likely several plea deals that can be worked out that will not leave your son with a record. Hire a good criminal defense lawyer; if you cannot afford a lawyer, the court will appoint one for your son.
