You need to retain an attorney for your mother. Although jail time for a first-time offense such as this is highly unlikely, your mother's health dictates a quick resolution to this matter.

She may need an attorney. At the first court appearance, talk to the assistant district attorney and see if they will dismiss the charges as long as your mother attends STOPLIFT or some similar program. If they will, she can get the charges thrown out this way.
