Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
Picking Up Fallen Street Sign
It is to my understanding that it is illegal to steal, tamper, or remove street signs. However, two cars crashed into a stoplight pole, causing a street sign on the pole to fall off. It is not a Stop sign or any sort of traffic sign, but just a sign labeling the street name. Is it still illegal to pick up and keep a street sign that fell off and is broken?

Re: Picking Up Fallen Street Sign
An easy way to figure out any case like this is to ask yourself" Does this item belong to me or did the owner give me permission to have it?" If the answer to either question is "no" then it is illeal. Yes it is illegal to take the sign.
