Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

possession of forged instrument

I was doing a favor for my cousin, not think that this was a crime. I cashed a check from a company that she works for. and now months later I was arrested and so was she.I only cashed one check for less than 3000 dollars but come to find out she had been cashing checks for months. so why did she need my help if she was still going to be foul. anyway I am being charged with possession of a forged instrument in the sceond degree. I dont have a lawyer because I cant afford one. and now I am being indicted. This is my fisrt offense ever what should I expected to happen. will I have jail time?

Re: possession of forged instrument

If you truly can not afford an attorney, you will be given one by the court, usually a legal aid attorney or someone from the 18b panel of attorneys in your area. You should listen to that person and discuss the possible consequences with them since they know all of the facts surrounding the situation you are in, not some completely anonamous attorney from a website. The majority of legal aid and 18b attorneys are excellent and will do a good job. But, if you have any access to funds, family members you can call on, loans you can take, you should consider getting a private attorney since they can spend more time and may have more resources to assist you.
