In most states, you must go to a law school, although a very few will let you work in a lawyers office as a clerk for several years.

Then you havev to take a "Bar" exam. Most law schools require a college 4 year degree, although a very few will let you in law school with three years of college. It depends a lot on what state you live in, and where you want to work when you are a lawyer. California lets you study on your own or at an unaccredited law school, and then take a test after the first year of study, then after the third year. Every state has their own particular requirements. The State Bar Assocaition, or the Board of Bar Examiners or some organization with a similar name, located in your state capital, can tell you the requirements for the state you live in, or where you plan to work. I'd say 99% of lawyers nowdays get a four year college degree, then go to law school for three years after that.
