Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

The procedure court for a criminal case (assault)

My question is regarding the procedure and order of questioning that goes on in a criminal case. I am writing a novel in which two characters end up in court. Who speaks first, the defendant for the plaintiff? How involved are the attorneys---how long does the questioning have to go on for a minor case like this? Would the judge ask the parties involved if they want to add anything to their testimony before making his decision?

How do I go about getting an attorney to look over my scene for accuracy?

Very interesting. I have often thought of writing a thriller resulting in a criminal trial. I would be happy to consult with you. I am a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor. Please call me if you are interested.
