Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

public urination

my son received a pink summons to appear in criminal court for this act...he did not tell me about this, i found out on my own and he said he is going to go to court and take care of it....do i need to worry about this? Should I go with him, even though he didnt tell me about it (he is 19 years old), and the summons has his wrong year of birth....please help ASAP he thinks nothing of this I am worried sick...

usually there are various things to consider on cases such as this... while in virtually all cases there is no fear of any serious punishment - what you may correctly worry about would be the addition of such a charge on a permanent record, or the potential for a criminal record over such a minor situation...

In general, if this is within the city most attorneys handle such cases for a relatively nominal fee... I would suggest if you are truly worried hiring a professional to accompany him to Court and ensure that he is adequately protected...

Overall, the usual end (disposition) to such cases occurs at the first court appearance and there is a fine to be paid within a reasonable period of time thereafter.

Depending upon the written charge, your son may be charged with a misdemeanor. The usual result in these cases is a plea bargain to a violation with a small fine and no criminal record.
