Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I received a ticket for discharging a shotgun within 500 feet of a residence. I was told that this is a misdemeanor. This was truly an accident since I did not see the home an thought I was safe to hunt and only shot into an open field were I knew it was safe to shoot. What am I looking at as a fine/penalty and do I need a lawyer? Should I plead not guilty or throw myself at the mercy of the court? Thank you.

Yes, you need a lawyer. You are facing a serious crime and could be sentenced to jail. Sit down with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible.
