Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
shoplifting
a friend was arrested for having in possession $918.00 worth of stolen goods from a macy department store. she was acosted and transferred to the local authorities. the judge set bail at $250.00. on a return court date, my friend was directed to contact a lawyer and was told her crime was in the fifth degree which is punishable up to a year in prison. my friend has no other prior, she is only 18 years old.

In a situation such as this your friend would have a much greater chance of getting the case against her signifacntly reduced or even dismissed if she retained the services of a lawyer to represent her in court, especially if it is her first offense. She should immediately get an attorney, it is VERY important to have someone that can handle this situation well and can aim to have a result that will not affect her future, as she is still very young.
