Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
shop-lifting
18 yr old daughter got arrested shoplifting. She never did anything wrong and has no record. Do we need a lawyer. Or can a parent just go with her. Is this seriuos. She took items from K-mart worth about 38.00 dollars.

Re: shop-lifting
My advice would be to go to the first court appearance and try to negotiate a dismissal with the Asst. D.A. They should offer her an ACD (adjournment in contemplation of dismissal), where the case gets adjourned for six months and then automatically dismissed if she doesn't get into trouble during the 6-month period.
There may be conditions attached to the ACD, like community service and/or the StopLift program (a 1-day class).
If she's not offered the above, you should consider hiring a lawyer.
