Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Small Claims Court

My mom bought a jeep from me for 500 dollars. A friend took the title, and reciept which my mom requested i leave blank because the jeep was going in my sisters name. I filed for a duplicate title, and gave my mom a new reciept. NOW I am being sued in Small Claims court for 2,500 for the Jeep from the ''friend'', who has stolen paperwork. What should i do? All I did in this mess is sell a jeep. AND my mom was arrested in the process.

Re: Small Claims Court

Assuming it involved the jeep, what was your mom arrested for?

As for the paperwork, you will have to establish that the papers your "friend" took are fraudulent or were lost and have them invalidated. The duplicate title and the receipt/bill of sale to your mom should be sufficient to establish the chain of ownership assuming he didn't inject himself between you and her.

Do you know if he registered the jeep?

If he did, contact the police and discuss with them the possibility of filing a criminal complaint for car theft. His actions of taking constructive possession of the jeep should be sufficient.
