Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

My son is 17 and was involved in an altercation at school. The "victim" sustained a fractured nose. The mother filed assault charges against my son and another boy and my son was arrested. Now he has to go to court. What type of attorney do I need? Do I even need an attorney?
