my son wrote a personal check to a supermarket and it bounced what are the penalties

Was your son aware of the fact that there was not enough funds in the account to cover the check when he wrote the check?
If your son did this intentionally there may be a problem.
If not, your son will just have to pay the return check fee and the amount of the check in cash or with a money order.
