what happens if a waiver to a speedy trial is signed?

The waiver allows the prosecution to take as much time as they want bringing the case to a grand jury. Also, if the defendant is in custody, it eliminates the defendant's right to have a hearing to test the weight of the prosecution's evidence (or have the case brought to a grand jury for indictment).

In other words, it gives the prosecution a free pass. My question is, What did the defendant get IN RETURN FOR THE WAIVER?
