Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Stalking

I have been stalked by an ex-boyfriend who goes to my College. He has done many things to mentally harm me. He has been asked to leave me alone but has continued not to for about 10 months. I do not know what legal action to take or if I have enough evidence to do anything. I do feel threated emotionally and physically.

Re: Stalking

You should contact the police; at minimum, you should obtain an order of protection.

Re: Stalking

Get to a Police officer, to campus security and to the Dean of Student's office. Start making a record. Then call a good attorney who will bring a harassment suit against this guy and get you an Order of Protection.

IF you REALLY feel threatened, then Change your phone number and locks and if you can your address. Do not leave a forwarding address with the Post Office unless you notify the postal inspectors of the problem. They have ways of handling the issue.

Have your mail sent to a post office box. Bills too. If he knows where you work or go to school, try to change this too.

Always make sure someone trustworthy will know where you are going and when you will be back. Keep in touch with this person.

Change ALL E-MAIL PASSWORDS. Same with any MY SPACE, or Facebook pages too cellphone voicemail also. Do not put up "wall posts" for a good while. Tell your friends to be discrete too as to what they post on your wall and even about you on other's walls. Do not let them post pictures of you as if he sees them he will know who you are hanging out with and where.

Avoid going to places you usually hang out in. That way if you do relocate he cannot find you to follow you. Keep your eyes and ears open... all the time.

Think about getting a very big, strong, protective Dog. It will be a good investment for a lot of reasons beyond the twisted guy who is your present problem.

Those tips will help keep you safe. Then let the lawyers Deans campus security and police do their jobs.

Good Luck. Please take this type of behavior seriously. You may call my office if you want to speak about this more, or send me an e-mail.

Re: Stalking

Besides reporting this to the police, you can also go directly to Criminal Court and/or Family Court and file an Order of Protection against him for stalking and harassment. Please take action to protect yourself as soon as possible. If you want to discuss this matter further, please feel free to e-mail me.

Re: Stalking

You should file a police report. If he is arrested the Court will be able to issue an order of protection for you.
