For a first offense, you will be offered a plea bargain to a very reduced charge, probably Disorderly Conduct or even possibly an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal also known at an ACD or ACOD. But saying that, you will not be offered anything close if you represent yourself. District Attorney's usually do not talk to the pro se defendant (self represented) but want an attorney to talk negotiate with. You should look for an attorney who knows how to handle these types of cases.

you don't need a lawyer, your mother does. With the right lawyer she can force the DA to drop charges against you.

Keep in mind that you might not even need to negotiate a plea with the District Attorney. In order for the prosecution to proceed against you they must have a witness/owner of the vehicle to testify that you did not have permission or authority to be in possession of the vehicle in the first place. If your mother wont cooperate with the District Attorney, the charges against you might very well be dropped.
