The criminal statute of limitations will depend upon whether you are charged with a misdemeanor or a felony. I have represented clients in this matter. The problem is usually not the purchase of the box because that may have occurred many years before. The problem is usually that the box is still in use and the theft of services is very recent- within the time limitation to bring civil and CRIMINAL actions. Penalties can be high. I don't want to sound defeatist, but I have found the cable companies to have excellent evidence to support their cases against box users. You should assess your position closely and should consider representation.
