Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
What do you do if you suspect someone is opening your mails?
I live in a 3-unit building and someone has been opening my letters. I have an idea who is doing that. The person filed a court case against me and I never got the letter that was supposed to ask me to come to court so I missed the court date. Fortunately for me, the court postponed the date and sent someone to tape another letter on the main door to make sure I get it and don't miss the next court date. The first letter that was opened was my tax so even though I saw it opened, I took the contents and went to the city hall to pay my tax. However, I have not touch the contents of the second letter. The post office adviced me to file a report with the Police. The Policeman was not corporative at all. He did not want to file the report. I told him it is federal offense for someone to open my letters, and then he unwillingly filed a report but all that he wrote down was that ''I said someone is opening my letters and I went to the post office and the post office asked me to go and file a Police report.'' He will not include the details that I gave him. Since I have a letter that can be checked for figure prints, how should I go about it to get justice?

I am surprised that someone at the post office sent you to the regular police department because the Postal Service has its own police department which is known as the United States Postal Inspection Service. Their web site is: http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/
