Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

teenage mistakes

I am the father of two adopted children who have made a couple of stupid mistakes this past summer. My 19 year old daughter stayed out all night and when too afraid to return home she went to a local police station and began to fabricate a story about being raped, which she later recounted before leaving the police station. She was charged about 3 weeks later with filing a false police report misdemeanor 3*. My 20 year old son was videotaped at an ATM cashing two paychecks for a former employee, that were apparently stolen. The checks were returned uncashed due to no signature. He paid the amount of one check to the credit union. Then apparently 2 monthes later, his employer tracked down the individual who gave him the checks and asked him to cash them; he implicated my son as an accomplice, and the detective told my son that it was his word against my son's. He was subsequently arrested and charged with misdemeanor petty larceny. My daughter, moved out of our home for 5 mo. returned in May, with a lot of bills and no place to live, so we took her in. She has been denied for a public defender. My son turns 21 prior to court date. Both kids have never been in trouble before. What is the possible penalty be for each?

Re: teenage mistakes

Generally in the case of most first offenses, if they are minor, youre not generally looking at a serious potential for incrceration but the potential still exists.

If you do not qualify for a public defender your only option then becomes hiring a private attorney. My office specializes in criminal cases, and would be able to assist you with both of these situations. Please feel free to contact my office as there is no fee for the initial phone conversation or the initial meeting. you can reach me at 2127098303
