what does examination before trial mean?

A simple question! In the American legal system, both parties are supposed to ivestigate and discover all of the facts of the case BEFORE the trial. The trial is where the parties present evidence, not discover new information.
EBT refers to the legal devices for getting information; deposition, subpoena, etc.
