Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

are verbal threats illegal

i was threatened by a man who lives on my road who told me he would hurt me to the point where i physically could no longer drive a car the man is a registered sex offender in ny state and is currently on probation for the next 10- years because of this , seeing as he threatened to harm me i was hoping to at least make sure he got disciplined for what he did or else he may actually hurt me or my family i feel unsafe with him living so close and was hoping you could help answer my question so i could know what i can do in this situation , i have already contacted the local police who have done nothing to help me

Varbal Threat to do Physical Harm . . . MAY be a Harrassment (Violation). May also be enough for you to get an Order of Protection against him. Contact a local attorney or a local victims rights group and they may be able to assist you.

I agree with Mr. McElwee but I would also go to the District Attorney's office and file a complaint directly with them. If the Police won't act try to get the prosecutor to act instead. Getting an attorney is a good idea as well, they can advocate for you in a way that will demonstrate that you are very serious.
