Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I'm watching the UK show "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" and I know that it is not wholly reflective of the life of a prostitute, being a TV show and all. Anyway, the main character briefly mentions that it isn't illegal for her to be a prostitute because she's a single female without dependents, but that it is illegal for her agent (who is essentially a madam).
For any lawyers familiar with UK laws, I wanted to ask, is that true? And for US lawyers, can you please answer 2 questions for me:
1) Why is prostitution illegal in the first place (aside from the "moral" reasons)?
and
2) Could getting paid to literally do non-sexual activities (...like literally non-sexual. Think dinner, movies, shopping, etc) be considered prostitution?

Sorry, not familiar with UK law, but it is an interesting question.
