Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
In New York, if I steal property valued in excess of $1,000, I will be charged with felony. What if I steal $999.99? Suppose I steal it from a man who is really rich and probably won't even sue me, or I steal it from a poor guy and $1000 is all he owns and I ruin his life, will the the jury's verdicts be different?

Theft is a crime no matter who you steal from and the jury would be so instructed. Certainly a one cent difference would probably not matter. Other things may factor such as whether you were armed etc. Being sued does not come into this at all. You would be charged by the district attorney of a crime.
