legal dating age in Brooklyn, NY

I am 17 years old living in Brooklyn, NY and was once told by a police officer that it is legal for me to date someone who is 21years of age or under. Is this true?

You may date any person of any age and you may date as well at any age.

On the other hand, the age of consent for physical intimacy is 16 for a female.
