Re: law school
Is law school worth it? Doesn't that depend on what you want from your law school education?
If you want to be a lawyer, because you find the law to be a facinating study, and because you want to help people in a way that effects not just the one person but many, then there is no better way to do it than to be a lawyer.
If you want to learn law to help you in establishing a business then it helps there too.
If you want to be a lawyer because you want to Have it Made for the rest of your life, DON'T BOTHER!!!!!
Law school promises you nothing but the ability to think like a lawyer. To reason problems and to look for solutions through a certain paradigm. It is not a guarantee of success.
If you want to work your butt off everyday, and continue to sacrafice for years after graduation for the privilege of being a lawyer, then fine. Cream rises to the top. But if you intend to make a quick buck and get out, fugetaboutit.
I have been a lawyer for well over 20 years now. There hasn't been a day that wasn't more interesting and exciting than in any other endevor. There hasn't been a day that I haven't learned something new. There hasn't been a day when I was assured of a living either. Nevertheless there hasn't been a day when I haven't thanked God I have this profession to practice in. Not because I am a "rich" man, or because the practice will make me monetarially rich, but because in the end, I can look at my clients and my part of the world and realize it is better because I have chosen (or was I called) to practice in this profession. That sense of wonder and learning has I think made me good at what I do. In turn that has made me successful both in my work, and in my life. Could I make more doing something else? Probably. Would I want to do anything else? NO!! You will find too that if you work at it hard enough, you will live comfortably. Like a king? Most likely not. But as a respected member of your community? Most definitely.
Money is a fleeting fancy, generosity, kindness and helpfulness nourishes a soul for an eternity.
Best wishes.
