Elder Law
My family would like to apply for medicaid for my mother for nursing home care. She and my father have no assets, make $27k in SS benefits, live rent free with my sister. Their net worth is $7k. What is involved in applying for medicaid in Westchester, NY? Is there an online form? I know I need a list of papers that I'm collecting. How long is the process? Can it be expedited? Medicare will stop paying her rehabiliative care in nursing home as of 04/08. My father is an amputee and almost deaf. He is barely taking care of himself and won't be able to care for my mother. Is there a resourse manual I can read that will walk me through this process? Please help. Thank you.

Re: Elder Law
Unfortunately this is one of those government run programs and application processes where it's so convoluted to complete the paperwork that (almost) no normal person can do it without help. Find a nursing home first, and let the folks there complete the application and/or guide you through the system.
I would first go down to your local office and ask your questions and get first-hand advice from the folks that review and process the applications. They are the most knowledgeable and generally very helpful.
Good luck.
