My father just passed
and he has a pension and life insurance policy, before he passed he let me know about this. I recently found out that his live in girlfirend is being awarded everything. I dont understand how and dont know how to go about finding out things. what should be my first step. I do know they had a bank account together.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
As a distributee of your dad's estate you are entitled to file for Letters of Administration if dad didn't have a Last Will and Testament, unless your brother or sister already did that. You need to take action asap to protect your rights regarding dad's estate; now is the time to assert your rights, or you will lose them forever.
