Legal Question in Elder Law in New York

Medicare A and Hospital Faculty Practice

In late April, my nonagenarian mother was rushed to a local teaching hospital. She still is there. At first,we could not even straighten out her Medicare A membership as Social Security had a different DOB than her birth certificate and her marriage license. After she was in the hospital a few days, we got that starightened out. Checking her mailbox, we found bills from the hospital faculty practice for her 1st few days at the hospital. Although she still is there, no more bills have been received. Does Medicare A cover the services of faculty practice doctors, in other words, doctors not just affiliated with the hospital but part of its teaching faculty? I know she has been seen by interns and residents also. In addition, is the ambulance cost covered by Medicare A as it was an ambulance of this particular teaching hospital? A few yrs ago, when I already had power of attorney, I enrolled my mom for Medicare B. I figured she already was showing signs of the dementia that now is on her chart & which brought her non-responsive to the hospital. She called Social Security, complained & told me she had them take away the Medicare B deduction. Is there anything I can do now? I hate to see the small inheritance go to the gov

I'm really, really sorry to hear your mom is in bad shape. I will pray for her.

Medicare A and B should cover almost all of the charges mentioned in your post. You're dealing with a government system on the one hand though, and a hospital system on the other, so it's not going to be pretty. Don't let them scare you with the bills.

Take care of your mom.

Good luck.
