Post Mortem Bills
My 85 year old mother passed away last week. She was a widow at the time of her death. Her only asset is her house, which has been for sale for a month but without any offers, as of yet, due to the current economy. She had an insurance policy which was used to pay for part of the funeral expenses. There are no savings accounts and only a few hundred dollars in a checking account which she added my name to shortly before her illness. I have used the money from her checking to pay the insurance, water and electric bills on her house. Where do we stand with paying her medical bills, the balance of her funeral expenses, and credit card debt? Will the creditors wait until the house is sold, or are we, her family, immediately responsible? Does having my name on her checking account make me liable?

Re: Post Mortem Bills
I am sorry for the loss of your mom.
No, you are not responsible. The estate is. What are the creditors going to do? They just have to wait, and they know that. Doesn't make them stop calling daily, unfortunately.
Good luck.
