Legal Question in Entertainment Law in New York

Management contract

Question is this. My daughter is an actress/singer and has been in the entertainment business for a few years. We used to live in NY, but have recently moved to L.A. to give her more opportunities with her career. A couple of years ago, we signed a contract for an acting talent manager for her (4 year contract) in NYC. Since we have moved to L.A. a year ago, her manager has done basically nothing for her. She has a great agent (which she did acquire through the manager) and we've signed with them about a year ago when we moved here.

Now, our daughter is turning 18 at the end of May. We signed the contract for her with this manager (she signed also) because she was a minor. She wishes to dissolve the contract with this manager when she turns 18 if that is possible and legal. Is it? Is this an option for us - sending this manager a certified letter from my daughter stating that she is now legal and would prefer to sign with a manager herself since she is now of age?

Re: Management contract

If the contract was court-approved, she can't void it for being a minor. If it wasn't, you can. Even if the contract was court-approved, there may be other issues here such as the good faith efforts made by the manager on your daughter's behalf or whether the manager fully performed. It's impossible to advise you without reviewing the contract. If you'd like to contact me for an initial complimentary consult, please contact me. As your daughter is no longer a minor, she would be the client ultimately.

I agree with Mr. Mark, an attorney would need to see the agreement and know more facts to assist you.
