Legal Question in Entertainment Law in New York

Special case of defamation

I recently ended a breif affair with someone who is an agent with a particular talent agency in New York. This person has threatened to ''blacklist'' me and basically end my acting career in New York. Does this individual have the ability to do this? Is there anything I can do to protect myself?

Re: Special case of defamation

Congratulations on having made it far enough in your career to have been told that youll never work in this town again. If you remain in the business, expect to hear it a few more times.

Can a person be blacklisted? In truth, there are very few people in the industry who have the kind of influence that is necessary to make that happen. A person can speak badly of you, and, if the statement are false and damaging, can then be sued for libel.

If the agency is large and legitimate, you might want to go to this persons supervisor and let him/her know what has happened. Most legitimate agencies have policies against the kind of conduct that you have described. Otherwise, try to let it go.
