Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My 17 year old daughter has decided to stop visiting or talking to me for the past 8 months because she claims I did not have her best interest in mind when I asked her father for a divorce. We have been divorced for 4 years. This is something she just came up with because living with him means no rules. She has decided that she no longer wants any type of a relationship with me. Am I obligated to pay for 1/2 her college tution now that there has been this change? I agreed to pay half in the divorce decree.

The bottom line first: yes, you're still obligated to pay.

It's not uncommon for children to be very angry that their parents have gotten a divorce. Often they'll take sides, and blame (fairly or unfairly) one of the parents for the breakup. Other times they'll blame themselves, which is far more dangerous.

The best tactic is patience. It's not easy, but over time these wounds are most often healed.
