Legal Question in Family Law in New York

19 Year Old Being Kicked Out

My son's girlfriend just turned 19. Her mother told her today she has 2 weeks to find another place to live and gave her boxes to start packing! Sounds like she and her step father don't get along, but she and her mother normally do. There was no fight or violation of house rules that caused this. She does not work, but does attend college full time during the school year. Who is financially responsible in a case like this? Without a job she can't possibly afford an apartment. She really is a sweet girl.

It is hard to say. If she gets arrested or goes on state financed support, it may well come back to her mother. Sounds like a social worker should be contacted. She can also see people at Covenant House or Catholic Charities.

Good Luck.
