Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Adoption of an Adult

I am 42 years old and am interested in having the man who is my mothers common law and raised me adopt me as his only child. He is in agreement, delighted and honored. I live in Columbia, Sc and he lives in Brooklyn, NY. NYC is the place of my birth. Please send info on how to make this happen. I'd like to give it as his Fathers Day present for 2005.

Re: Adoption of an Adult

Unless the law has changed, I don't believe an adult may "legally" adopt an Adult. Further a person cannot "Adopt" him or herself to another.

Adoption is most commonly initiated by the "parent" to be.

Of course either you or your "Stepfather" may identify yourselves and your relationship, to the world, any way you want; and he may legally designate you as his "son" adopted or otherwise, as his sole heir and kin.

Good luck,
