Legal Question in Family Law in New York
Advice on self representaion in chinld support case.
I am 18 years old and i am looking to go to college and have a successful future. The only problem is that because of exteneded family situations, I am living on my own in my own apartment with my own bills to pay. The gross amount of these bills alone is overwhelming, let alone the cost for schooling. At this point I need to maintain a full time job just to pay the bills.
My father is a rich, rich man, a man withough a care in the world for his kids. I just recently filed to take him to court for family support and have already gone through the initial hearing. He has refused to pay a dime. I do not have money for a lawyer and had not relized before how in dept family court is and that walking blindly into court trial is suicide and may corrupt my one shot at getting into college and maintaing my bills.
Is there anyone which you could direct me to that could help explain to me how to self represent myself in court without falling on my face? I do no know the rules of court and the remainding stages, nor do I know any of the keyterms that will be used in court. I do no know how to represent myself, can somebody help?

Ask the hearing examiner for appointment of counsel. Also, ask that either the court or your father pay for it. Be prepared to submit your financial statment to demonstrate your need for an attorney and your inability to pay for one.
In NY, child support is a parental obligation until the child is at least 21, or emancipated.
Unfortunately, it appears that you are emancipated and might have a difficult time proving that you continue require support.
