At what age can a child in a custody situation in New York state (Suffolk County, Long Island) determine which parent they want to live with.

Never. That being said, the court will take the child's opinion into consideration after the age of 12 and will usually yield to the child's decision after the age of 15 in most cases, but not all and the court will act in the "Best Interests of the Child" in all cases.
