Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Age limit for moving out of parents home

I have a girlfriend, and she is having problems with her parents. She is 17 years of age, and she wants to move out, she would like to move in with me. Ontario County Sheriff Department is saying that legal age is 18, but I have a friend who is in the Monroe County Sheriff's Department and he said that it is still 16. I would like to know what the legal age limit is for Canandaigua, New York.

Re: Age limit for moving out of parents home

If you are over 18 and have sex with a 16 yr old in NY ( and in most other states), you can still be charged with Rape.

T'is better to wait until she is at least 18. Or have her parents consent in writing to her marriage, if there is some necessity for her to live with you now.

Please note, although many people today flaunt their distain for the "old fashioned" ways concerning how a young people should conduct themselves, the law has not changed and if it is not adhered to, the consequences can be severe.

GOOD LUCK,
