Legal Question in Family Law in New York

After answering action for divorce

I was served with an Action for Divorce. I typed up, filed with the court, and served my answer. I could not find a lawyer to represent me for anything I could afford. My question is, what happens now? Do ''they'' (my estranged husband's ''side'') get a court date or do I? Do I just wait and see what happens? Thank you for any help. Lisa

The plaintiff's attorney should proceed.

Even though you cannot afford to retain an attorney, suggest you consult with an experienced matrimonial attorney to educate yourself as to the procedures, as well as your rights and your options.

I practice in NYC and Long Island.

The facts you included in your question are unclear. Do you have children, property assets are all important factors. If you dont have assets property or children then you can wait for a court date and not contest the divorce ,if there are other factors then an attorney is necessary and you are right we are not inexpensive .You may contact me for further advise @718-834-0087
