Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Bahamas marriage

Is a marriage in the Bahamas legally recognized in New York State. If so, is there a way or place where a marriage certificate from the Bahamas can be filed so that there is a public record of the marriage in New York State?

Re: Bahamas marriage

Yes, your Bahamian marriage is recognized in New York. Generally, the rule is that a marriage is valid in New York if it was valid in the jurisdiction in which the marriage took place. There are some very unusual exceptions - but unless your marriage is incestuous, you probably don't have to worry.

It is not necessary to file your marriage certificate - but you can ask you County Clerk if they have any register in which it can be recorded.
