Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Last name change for Adult

Hello, i'm interested in changing my last name to an alternate spelling. My reasoning is because first, I like it better, and second, when I have my first child, I would rather have them have the alternate spelling of our last name, because it is easier to pronounce, and will save them frustration like I had in school. But one thing is, that I know will probably get into the way, is that I do have a one time offense criminal record. Is there still a chance for me to petition for the name change? Thank you.

Re: Last name change for Adult

A criminal record does not normally prevent a person from changing their name.

So long as your proposed "name change" is not intended or designed to commit fraud, or misrepresentation, you may change your name formally, by way of a, Court Petition to Change your Name or its spelling. Or, you may INformally change your "Use" name or its spelling.

Good luck,
