Can I change my children's last names?

I was divorced in 2000, and have recently decided to re-assume my maiden name, even though I elected not to do so at the time of the divorce. I have two children, one with my ex-husband. I have custody of both children, but

both have their father's last names. I feel it would be in their best interest to also assume my maiden name, so that we all have the same last name as opposed to three different last names within our family. Neither of

their fathers have seen them in over 4 years. Can I simply apply for new social security cards for them when I apply for mine, or is there another process I need to go through?

P.S. One of the fathers is in New Hampshire, and the other is in Michigan

You would legally need to change the names of your children and have it approved by a court of proper jurisdiction.

You will have to seek a legal change of name. The father's consent is required.
