Legal Question in Family Law in New York

name change

I a divorce is dragging on and on...does a woman have to wait until the divorce decree is issued by a judge to change her name to her maiden name?

If not, what is the process and approximately how much would it cost?

Thank you very much.

Re: name change

At the end of a divorce, the judgment typically provides that the woman can resume theuse of her maiden name.

One can always start an action to legally change the name as long as it is not for a fraudulent purpose. The only reason to wait is the expense since the action for a name change involves publication, it can be expensive.
