Legal Question in Family Law in New York

name change for legal aliens

i became a legal citizen about 10 years ago. i've resided in ny for the same amount of time. is there a different process that i have to go through to get my name changed since i am a legal alien? or do i give them a copy of my birth certificate from my native country in addition to my naturalization certificate?

Re: name change for legal aliens

There is no difference between the name change process for New York residents who were born

in the United States outside of New York and for New York residents who are naturalized American citizens born outside the United States except for the obligation upon those born outside the United States to provide a naturalization certificate.

No birth certificate is required unless the name change applicant was born in New York which would not apply to you.
