Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Name Changing

My daughter has asked me if it is possible to have her name changed. Which I know the answer is yes. But what I don't know is, the cost of this. Can you give me and idea of what the cost would be to change a name, the first name (and only the spelling of it)?

Thank You

Re: Name Changing

Changing a name is relatively inexpensive. Although you may have to pay for an index number $170.00 (the number to index this matter with the counter clerk), I know that the RJI fee (request for judicial intervention) has been waived.

Speaking for this firm, two hours of legal work should cover everything (conferences, preparation of petition, filing, etc.). I charge $200.00 an hour, so the total cost would be $400.00, not including disbursements.

You may be able to do this yourself. Feel free to review the law set forth in the New York Civil Rights Law.

Re: Name Change

You can also proceed in the Civil Court and save the $170 Supreme Court Index number fee. In either court you will have to pay for the cost of publication.

You do not mention your daughter's age, or your marital status, or whether the father will consent.

I charge a flat-rate for name changes of $1500, rather than an hourly charge.

Hope this helps.
