How old can a child be to go to the court and tell the judge who they want to live with?

Assuming we are talking about family court: If a child is 14 years or older their consent (which can be overridden by a judge) must be obtained regarding custody. If younger, the Guardian-ad-Litem (a lawyer assigned by the court to represent the child) will talk to the child and make a representation to the court regarding the child's preference.
