Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Child support and custody

My son lived most of his life with his mother in a different state. Now he is with me because high schools are better where i live. We all agreed this would be best including my son. My concern is she still recieves child support. I want to request a modifican but fear because i do not have full custody she might want him back. I can not afford to maintain him and continue to send her support. What happens next?
