How much child support?

My ex-girlfriend whom I still share an apartment with and have a 3 yr. old daughter with, has threatened me that she will kick me out and collect 1/4th of my paycheck in child support. Now I don't make much to begin with and I fear that if what she says is true, I will begin to struggle with finances. She tells me that she doesn't care about me because her rent will be paid with my check and that the money will go to her own benefit and not really used for ''child support''. Is her claim true? Will I end up in a financial crisis?

In New York, child support is calculated pursuant to a formula known as the Child Support Standards Act. In general, child support for one child is 17% of your gross income less social security deductions. Depending on where you live, however, and other factors, it is possible that more will be deducted from your salary before calculating child support. Similarly, if you earn less than the support reserve ($10,000), the maximum amount of child support is $25.00 per month. There are steps that you can take to reduce your support obligation. I suggest that you immediately consult with a lawyer.
